Custom

1st January is “Oshogatu”. It means welcome to God. Japanese people decorate rice cake called “Kagamimoti”. In the morning, we can see sun called “Hatuhinode”. It is beautiful. We eat “Oseti” and “Ozouni”. “Oseti” is a feast. It is special box meals. “Ozoni” is dried fish soup with rice cake. There are a lot of kinds. Children get a lot of money called “Otoshidama”. Some people play “Hagoita” like tennis and “Takoage”.
3rd March is “the doll’s festival”. The day is girls day. We decorate dolls and peach flowers. We drink a sweet beverage made from fermented rice or sake less. Some children hold a party. Then, we eat rice mixed with vegetables and fishes. It is very colorful. And eat confectionery. For example, “Hinaarare”. It made from rice.
5th May is “the boy’s festival”. Many people call “Children day”. We decorate “Koinobori” and “armor”. We eat “chimaki”. It is sweet bean jelly coverd by bamboo grass. At night, we take a bath in calamus leaves.
